F.A.Q.

What exactly is sod?
It is grass cultivated in special nurseries, developed under scientific supervision and when ready, it is cut in rolls, along with a thin layer of soil which is supported by the root system and a special net.
How is it trasported?
A four-axle truck can carry about ± 1100m², while a small truck ( two-axle) about 500m². The grass is placed in pallets about 50m²/pallet, with approximate weight ±1000 kg (for the small dimension). Next it is placed using forklifts to the trucks.
After the installation, how long do we have to wait before walking upon?
Less than three weeks, is the optimum time, which is the time required for the roots to penetrate the soil.

Which is the max time limit the grass can stand from cutting to installing?
During the hot days of the year, the installation has to be done within fifteen hours but during cooler or cold days it can be placed within 36 hours.
How often should I cut the grass?
Depending on the temperature, cutting is needed 4-5 times a month for the cool season varieties and 1-2 times for the warm season varieties.
What is the ideal cutting height?
For the cold-season varieties 4-5 cm and for the warm-season varieties 2-3 cm. It is advisable to adjust the mower on a flat surface. Do not let the grass grow to a point where the leaves tilt and always remember that the knives should be sharp because otherwise they will cause damage and leave marks on the leaves and as a result it will be vulnerable to disease. If it develops too much, cut it gradually within a week till it reaches the desirable height.
How often should I water the sod?
The grass needs about 20-40mm of water a week, depending on the weather conditions and the variety.
How much fertiliser sod needs?
The quantity required depends on the fertility / composition of the soil, the variety and the season as well as the desired development rate. In order to determine which fertilizer is suitable in your case, contact one of our business associates.
What is the Big Slab?
It is a cutting machine with dimensions 1m width × 60m length. The installation in your place is done with special motor-driven carts. It is recommended especially for big flat areas like football pitches, golf courses, middle sized and large gardens. The machine΄s main advantage is that the sod installation finishes much earlier.
What is thatch?
Thatch is the accumulation of old leaves roots and other organic substances which are between the soil and the surface of the leaves. They obstruct the water from penetrating the root system.
How can I remove thatch?
By raking with a special tool. There is also a specialised automated machine that removes thatch without causing any problem to the sod. Assign this task to a special maintainer, especially if the sod area is over 100m2.
How can I recognise a pest problem?
The sooner you track such an infection, the more chances there are in succeeding with the elimination of the specific problem. Grey larvae: They move to the root system in order to chew the grass. Signs that can be traced include brown patches and birds feeding from the grass. If you suspect their presence, remove a piece from the grass and count the larvae. More than five per square may require treatment. The damage seems like big uneven patches. The treatment should be done during the evening hours when the larva is on the surface in order to feed itself. Get advise from your agriculturalist, in order to fight down as early as possible the infection that usually breaks-through.
When should I order my sod to have it on time?
The order should be given at least two days in advance, unless it is the rush season where it would be preferable to order a few days before. The delivery will be done the next day, unless the grass is sent though a transportation agency in which case the customer receives the product two days later. The orders are given to the central production unit or to an authorized associate.

Maintenance & longevity concerns me a lot. What do I do after installation?
The grass is delivered in perfect condition. This good condition depends mainly on the good maintenance and its proper use. Important points:
Before the installation:
  1. Correct choice of the variety according to your needs.
  2. Correct choice of the soil bed. The soil where the grass will be placed should contain over 80% of sand which has to be enriched with organic substance.
    After Installation :
  3. As soon as the grass roots, you should take care of the amount of water. In general, in depth irrigation is required. We always irrigate during the morning hours.
  4. We do not let the grass grow excessively. We always cut it to the suggested height according to variety.
  5. The nutrition of the grass is done after the irrigation, which is the most important part for the health and longevity of the grass.
