Athens 2004 - An Olympic success!
The biggest construction for the Olympic Games!

Hellasod undertook one of the largest projects of the Athens Olympics …. just before the games began, which was the construction of the arena of the Olympic Stadium.

For this project the Greentech Modular System was used for the first time in Greece. The modules were placed in a specially constructed area at Spata and filled with a suitable subsoil for drainage after examining hundreds of samples both from Greece and overseas. Next the turf was placed, after being washed using a special machine so as to be free the roots from the soil. It is noteworthy that the turf used was the new warm season variety Zeus, which was developed after three year experimentation and has extreme resistance to disease, acute weather conditions and tough use. The specialized staff of Hellasod consisting of Agriculturists and specialized technicians, some of which trained in the United States, assumed the challenging work of the cultivation and proper maintenance of the turf.

3. OAKA - unloading modules
The fertilization was done using specialized fertilizers that were imported from the UK, while the irrigation was mainly done during the evening hours due to high temperatures during the day. A cylinder type mower was used for the cutting of the turf so as not to cause any damage to it.
This project was a tremendous challenge for Hellasod. The responsibility was huge and the faintest divergence could have had disastrous results. HellasodΆs scientific staff was supervising the proper cultivation and maintenance of the turf on a daily basis.

4. Conveyor belt
The total area of the module-placed turf was approximately 9.000 m2( 7.000 modules) of which 8.000 m2were transported to the Olympic Stadium.
The modules had to be placed in the Stadium immediately after the opening ceremony, since the arena would be filled with water during the opening ceremony.

5. Installation of modules
At 2:00 pm, a day after the opening ceremony, and while some of the other workshops were still disassembling what was left from the settings, the first trucks carrying the modules arrived. There were more than 260 truck loads from Spata to the Olympic Stadium.
From the trucks the modules were transported to the installation area on a conveyor belt, which proved to be very helpful, since trucks, forklifts and other vehicles were coming in and out of the entrance at the same time.

6. Panoramic view of stadium
There was tremendous time pressure to complete the installation, that is before the start of the track games. The whole setting was like a military operation since there were various teams working with specific tasks. In every team there was a supervisor who gave “orders”. The workers, despite their number, worked perfectly non stop. There were very few breaks for rest and most of the supervisors did not sleep at all during the whole operation!

7. Final result
When the games began everything was ready, and we were all there to admire our accomplishment - the arena of the Stadium- which was assembled like a puzzle in two and a half days!
It is also noteworthy that the study, scientific supervision and quality control of the materials for this unique project was undertaken by Professor P. Nektario from the Agricultural University of Athens.
